Facts and Figures

Transformation is the word that guides and defines our development and the projects that we work on together with our Master’s students, city, industry and international partner universities in St. Petersburg, Russia’s cultural capital. Transformation of approaches to modern education, transformation of urban environment, transformation of social life and social spaces: these are the three key fields of activity that form the focus of our research and solutions, which are people-centered and aim to solve the modern challenges of our societies.

CLD
Established in 2015, Creative Lighting Department (CLD ITMO University) is an innovative research and educational multidisciplinary project of ITMO University, one of the leading Russian technical university.
Master Program
The international educational program is aimed at creative thinkers searching for new forms and tools of working with space both in theory and on practice.
Research Lab
The research and practical experience of CLD's team, in combination with the intellectual and material resources of the Research Lab, allows to complex analyze the urban lighting environment and meet the professional requirements of the global market.
Student Lab
The source of our inspiration is students — talented, active and open to new knowledge, experiments and experience.
Project Lab
CLD's team works closely with the Lighting Design industry, local municipalities, and international partner universities that allows designing comprehensive projects that are dedicated to the improvement of health, quality of life and city lighting environment.

Our History

  • 2 April 2015
    In the framework of the opening ceremony of The International Year of Light and Lighting Technologies in Russia was presented the prospect development of Russian education in the field of lighting design to Vladimir Vasilyev, Rector of ITMO University.
  • 1 September 2015
    The official date of birthday of the International Master's Program in Lighting Design at ITMO University developed by leading specialists of the University’s Creative Lighting Department (CLD ITMO University) under the leadership of Natalia Bystriantseva, Ph.D. in Architecture, one of the leading Russian experts in the field of lighting design.
  • 1−4 November 2017
    In just two years after its foundation in 2015, CLD ITMO University entered the top-5 shortlist of the Award for Education category of the prominent Professional Lighting Design Convention 2017.
  • 27 February 2019
    Two years later, the international lighting design community has once again professed its interest in supporting the development of creative and student-centered educational projects offered by ITMO: the University made a compelling debut in the Art&Design subject ranking of the QS World University Ranking by Subject 2019, taking first place in Russia and 151st place globally.
