The University of Tallinn, Tallinn Summer School, New Media Lab of the New Stage of Alexandrinsky Theatre, and CLD ITMO University are offering a great way to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Estonian independence with their free summer school course “Experimental Interaction Design: physiological computing technologies for performative arts”
This is a 6 day full-time course during which students will have an opportunity to explore challenges of the Neurotheatre, existing prototypes and will have to either refine them or work with alternatives based on their own interests. Students will work in teams and are expected to build hardware and/or software prototypes using Max MSP, Isadora, Python, Arduino-based controllers, various brain and peripheral physiology sensors, and actuators. The course will focus on Neurotheatre, a specific type of interactive theatre where audience and/or actors can communicate via brain and neural computer interfaces using multimodal sensors and actuators.
During this course, students will be supported by experts in Physiology, Interactive Design, Physiological Computing, Max/MSP, Isadora, and Arduino developers. Mentors: David Lamas, Aleksander Väljamäe and Yuri Didevich. Instructors: Ilkka Kosunen, Loore Martma, Taavet Jaansen and Hanna-Liisa Pender. Invited experts: Dmitrii Antropov, Georgii Oblapenko, Dmitriy Akhmediyev, Anna Antipova and Natalia Shemyakina. The main language of instruction is English, but support is also available in Russian.
On August 26, 2018 at 17:00 will be held an opening lecture for the Experimental Interactive Design course on "Neurotheatre as a research method at The New Stage of Alexandrinsky Theatre (open for anyone interested in the topic). Lecturer is Aleksander Väljamäe, Associate Professor at the School of Digital Technologies of Tallinn University. From August 27 to August 30 the students can participate in intensive training course. Core Design and Interaction Design topics in a provocative stance will invite participants to reflect upon ongoing shifts and re-framings in every area of Interactive Design. The course will allow to improve digital literacy and develop students’ skills in systematic evaluation of usability and user experience of interaction designs. On August 31 at 20:00 the students will present their projects at the New Stage of Alexandrinsky Theatre (open for anyone interested in the topic).
Participants and credit points
New Media artists, performers, engineers and technologists interested in New Media. Although everyone can apply to participate, students will be chosen based on their previous background and work experience. Students will be awarded 2 ECTS points upon attending all 6 days of the course and coursework submission and Tallinn University certificate.
The application deadline is May 30th. Applicants will be notified by June 6th. Applications include a few sentences (max 500 characters) on: motivation, field of study, other relevant background.
